John Vakountouzis
The Secretary General is responsible for the following duties:
- He is responsible for the competencies assigned to him by the Mayor through an official decision.
- The Secretary General heads all municipal staff and exercises supreme supervision and control over all municipal services.
He was born in Harar, Ethiopia, in 1962, where he completed his compulsory education.
From his early teenage years, after moving to Greece, he became actively involved in political and social struggles for democracy and social justice.
He is a graduate of the Department of Business Administration at the University of Piraeus and holds a Master’s degree from the University of the Peloponnese in “Local and Regional Development and Local Government,” with a specialization in “Economic Operations.”
Since 1982, he has worked for the City of Athens, serving for 44 years and advancing through all ranks up to the position of General Director of Financial Services, which he held for six years.
He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Islamic Mosque during its establishment period. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Agency for Local Development and Local Government (E.E.T.A.A.).
Throughout his professional career, he has been actively engaged in broader local government matters, participating in legislative drafting committees.
