"Cultural Summer 2010"

The City of Athens today announced details of its Cultural Summer 2010 event programme during a press conference held at Athens City Hall.

Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis thanked all of the artists for their involvement in this year's Cultural Summer in Athens, Athens-Piraeus Super-Prefect Dina Bei, City of Athens Cultural Organisation chairman Angelos Moschonas, Technopolis governing board chairman Fotis Ignatiou, City of Athens Music Ensembles chairman Yiorgos Katsaros, City of Athens Youth and Sport Organisation chairman Vassilis Kikilias and all Municipal employees who have assisted with the organisation of the Festival.

Mayor Kaklamanis said:

"This year, we, the Athens City Council, faced a dilemma due to the economic crisis and the exceptionally large reduction in state funding for all municipalities in Greece, as to whether we should stage cultural events or not. Because, of course, municipal staff wages was our priority and then everything else.

I must tell you that I stood up to the grumbling and misery voiced at City Council because I consider that Local Government should make a major contribution to our fellow citizens, especially in these difficult times we are all experiencing, by not making cutbacks, more importantly by not doing away with cultural events.
