Sporting events for Children

"Sport for Students"

"Sport for Students" is a programme whose intention is to familiarize Athens primary school students with Olympic Sports. Each year more than 14,000 children (aged 9 to 12 years) participate in the programme's theory cycle while at least 7,200 children are involved in the practical cycle (13 Olympic Sports).

The programme's first cycle includes familiarization with the basic rules of the various sports through video and multimedia screenings, while participants also have the opportunity to meet well-known athletes.

The second cycle (practical component) aims to assist students in developing the basic motor skills required for each sport and learning the rules through play and recreation.

"Sport for Students" is carried out in all seven City Districts, more specifically at the City of Athens Youth and Sports Organisation's (ONA) sports facilities, in school yards and other sites as arranged by the organizers.

The programme is conducted in cooperation with the Deputy Sports Ministry and the General Secretariat of Sport, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Interior, Public Administration and Decentralisation.

"Three-on-three Tournaments"

The annual "3-on-3" basketball tournament, co-organised by the City of Athens Youth and Sports Organisation (ONA) and the Hellenic Basketball Federation, draws a large number of participants.

Teams representing associations and schools, in addition to independent players, take part in the tournament.

Each team consists of four boys and girls aged 9 to 12.

Tournament format

  • Games are conducted based on the double-elimination system
  • Teams compete until they qualify for the final

At the end of the competition all participants receive commemorative diplomas and three-point and free-throw contests are held

"Mini Volleyball Tournament"

Each year the City of Athens Youth and Sports Organisation (ONA), in cooperation with the Athens and Eastern Attica Association of Volleyball Clubs (ESPAAA), stages a major event with the intention of familiarizing Athenian schoolchildren with the secrets of the sport.

Volleyball Association member clubs and primary schools from the seven City Districts compete in the Mini Volleyball Tournament. Boys and girls aged 9 to 12 take part in this sports event.

Each club and school has the opportunity to participate with as many teams as it wishes. Athletes are divided into teams each constituting three players and competition is based on the club system. Awards and honorary distinctions are presented at the end of the tournament.

"International Children's Games"

The International Children's Games, conducted under the aegis of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and considered a significant institution in the field of children's sport, will take place in Athens in 2009. Athens won the bid to host the event following a unanimous decision handed down by the International Children's Games organizing committee in August 2006 in Bangkok, Thailand. Athens' success in securing the event is a major success for our country. ONA is responsible for conducting the games.

Athens' hosting of the 2009 International Children's Games five years after the successful staging of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games constitutes an exceptionally significant opportunity to boost international interest in our city and country.

Oriented toward the sensitive 12-15 year age group, the International Children's Games are a major annual celebration of sport, culture, multicultural exchange, participation and brotherhood. Through the games the City of Athens has the opportunity to demonstrate its leadership role in the development of children's sport, cultural convergence and the promotion of the Olympic Spirit on a national and international level.

Since 2004 ONA has participated in the International Children's Games which take place every summer in major cities and involves children's teams from many countries around the world. Greek teams have achieved important distinctions in the competition.

The 2009 games are being held under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Karolos Papoulias, and the International Olympic Committee, while the event also has the full support of all Ministries, sports organisations and the General Secretariat for Youth.
