The Athens Municipal Creche was founded in September 1859 with the aim of housing, caring for and rehabilitating abandoned infants and young children as well as protecting mothers (married and single).

It constituted the initial core of paediatric care in our country, as well as the first training centre for students and doctors specialising in paediatrics.

Its main concern was the protection, normal psychosomatic development and social rehabilitation of infants. This was achieved chiefly through adoption and, where that was not possible, foster families. It is estimated that, during its initial operation, the crèche hosted a total of fifty-thousand (50,000) children.

In 1964 the first Childcare Centre was created within the Athens Municipal Creche building complex located at 51 Pireos St. In the late 1980s, the Municipal Creche responded to the urgent need for Day Care Centres and fulfilled its goal by establishing Nurseries and Childcare Centres to assist working mothers.

Today the Creche operates ninety-five (95) Childcare Centres within the boundaries of the City of Athens. The Athens Municipal Creche is responsible for the Childcare Centres established by the City of Athens over the years, as well as the former State Childcare Centres administered by the Health and Welfare Ministry before being transferred to the municipality.

Law 3448/06 (Official Government Gazette 950/B - 19/7/06) permitted the merging of several public entities, thus the Athens Municipal Creche now administers all Municipal Childcare Centres.

The City of Athens presently operates the largest network of Childcare Centres in Greece and the Balkans, and one of the biggest in Europe. The centres host some five-thousand six-hundred (5,600) children on a daily basis.
