Senior Citizens

The twilight years constitute a highly creative, productive and dynamic period in one's life.
In this spirit, the City of Athens has made provision for senior citizens through infrastructure, support activities and care services as well as measures to boost their self-confidence, sense of independence and self-sufficiency, and ability to contribute to and participate in society.
The City of Athens programme for senior citizens, a key priority for the municipality, involves the operation of Friendship Clubs, which act as an antidote to loneliness, and the "Help at Home" scheme, which serves the elderly and incapacitated individuals, most of whom live on their own, do not receive other forms of support and face serious health problems. The municipality has made and continues to make significant improvements to both elements of the programme.
The municipal authority aims to ensure its Friendship Clubs serve as sources of energy, where, rather than retreat into themselves and withdraw from life, senior citizens have the opportunity to become more active and strong on their own.
