Fostering the Urban food System Transformation through Innovative Living Labs Implementation (FUSILLI)

The City of Athens participates in the 100% funded project “Fostering the Urban food System Transformation through Innovative Living Labs Implementation” (FUSILLI) (of the European Project Horizon 2020 (H2020-FNR-2020 / CE-FNR-07-2020), which was kicked off in January 2021.

The project partners are 34 and can be seen on the webpage:

FUSILLI’s primary objective is that cities overcome the obstacles for the evolution and application of holistic policies and food, which support sustainable food transformations in urban, peri-urban and rural areas, in accordance with relative EU policies for the transformation of food systems into sustainable ones up to 2030. The project’s duration is 4 years.

So as to achieve this goal, FUSILLI creates a network of exchange of knowledge and learning between twelve European cities, so as to address the challenges and the transformations of food systems. These cities will incorporate food systems as part of their urban – rural agenda, will allocate and create opportunities for the transformation of food systems into sustainable, healthy and inclusive. Through an open community, cities will have the ability to put in action innovative policies and actions, putting citizens in the epicentre of the procedure.

Regarding the City of Athens, through the municipality’s participation in FUSILLI, the city will be given the opportunity to continue its action plan for sustainable food and through this, the transformation of the linear food model of the city into a holistic, sustainable, circular one, aiming at the following:

  • The mitigation of Green House Gases through the decrease and composting of fodd residuals

  • The food services of socially vulnerable populations

  • Raising citizens’ awareness on food policies &

  • Raising students’ awareness through educational activities
