19-03-2014: Melody from Beijing

"Melody from Beijing" in Athens
Concert at Megaron-the Athens Concert Hall on March 20th
The City of Athens, the Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB) of the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (ADDMA), the City of Athens Youth and Sport Organisation (OPANDA) and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Greece, having bestowed their auspices, cooperated with the Commission of Tourism Development of Beijing in order to organize the concert entitled "Melody from Beijing", which will be held on Thursday, March 20th at 20:30 at the Athens Concert Hall ("Christos Lambrakis" Hall). The concert will include two famous virtuosos of traditional Chinese musical instruments: Wei Zhou and Jing Yang. Wei Zhou is a renowned interpreter of the Chinese stringed instrument Erhu and has been honored with the title "Ambassador Erhu" for his great contribution to music both in China and internationally. Jing Yang - a student of the famous virtuoso Liu Dehai is an excellent performer of the Chinese lute (pipa) and is well-known for her exceptional musicality.

These two great musicians, with the erhu and pipa, will carry (figuratively) the audience to classic Beijing, through traditional music. They will be accompanied by the Chinese pianist David Qu and the Symphony Orchestra of the City of Athens, under the direction of renowned conductor Eleftherios Kalkanis. The program includes works of traditional and modern Chinese music, and transcriptions of famous works of Western music. Through the coexistence of traditional, classical and modern elements, Wei Zhou and Jing Yang will deliver the quintessence of Chinese traditional music with an excellent and sophisticated manner, while highlighting the cultural face of modern Beijing.

In this way, the music will be a bridge between the cities of Beijing and Athens, traveling the audience from the Acropolis to the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, from the Parthenon to the Temple of Heaven, to the classic and the modern Beijing.

The concert, entitled "Melody from Beijing", will take place within the framework of a series of cultural activities organized by the Committee for Tourism Development of the Municipality of Beijing, under the auspices of the Office of Foreign Affairs of the People's Government of the Municipality of Beijing. Similar events have already taken place in other countries such as: USA, France, Czech Republic, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc, with the goal of celebrating the culture of Beijing around the world.
