04-05-2010: "Take another look at Athens!"

"Take another look at Athens!" is the key message of Street Events 2010, organized by the City of Athens and the Municipality's Youth and Sport Organisation (ONA) and to be held Sunday, May 9, 2010, on Panepistimiou St.

This year, for the first, time a series of sports events has been organized under the title Athens City Games 2010. Following the Athens Fun Run, the Street Events are up next, which are being held on Sunday, May 9, 2010, on Panepistimiou Street between 8:30 and 13:00.

The event involves the transformation of the city centre into a sports field for young fans of football, basketball and tennis. The entire length of Panepistimiou St, from Sina St to Emmanuil Benaki St, will be closed to traffic and 5X5 basketball courts, football fields and tennis courts will be set up.

Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis said: "Sport and games are two things which, unfortunately, are easy to forget amid the difficulties of our day-to-day lives. However, these are two very important elements of life. For this reason, the City of Athens and the Youth and Sport Organisation are organising Street Events and invite you to exercise by playing football, basketball and tennis in Athens' city centre. On May 9 Panepistimiou St will be closed to traffic and open to children and all those who feel like they are still children. Let's have some fun and if you have forgotten how to, let the kids show you the way!"

ONA chairman Vassilis Kikilias said: "We all have an inner child hiding within us which wants to come out and play. Because all of us, regardless of age, were once children. On May 9 the City of Athens and the Youth and Sport Organisation invite you to let that child escape by playing on Panepistimiou Street - which will be closed to traffic - all day long! We invite you to take part in our Street Events, an event which offers an opportunity for sport and games through the transformation of Athens' city centre into a sports field for fans of football, basketball and tennis. Children of all ages, see you there!"
