The City of Athens Central Library was founded in 1835 by the first Mayor of Athens, Anargyros Petrakis.

A century later, in 1936, when the great personal collection of Yiorgos Vlachou was purchased, the library opened its doors to the public at the Old City Hall, on Athinas Street, at Loudovikos Square, as it was known then.

Since December 2002, it has been housed in a traditional building at 2 Domokou Street, at the Larissa railway station.

The Municipal Library carries approximately 55,000 titles. After the National Library and Parliament Library, it ranks third in terms of significance and size, but first as far as newspaper archives are concerned.

The collection includes a section on Athens (photographs, books, postcards), rare publications of the 18th and 19th centuries (which are not available for borrowing), Government Gazettes dating from 1833, Athens newspaper archives dating from 1862 until today and 900 magazine titles dating from 1834.

Title processing is conducted in accordance with international library science standards. The DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification) system is used to categorise materials and the AACR2 (Anglo-American cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition) system for cataloguing purposes. In recent years, it has begun to automate titles using National Documentation Centre AVEKT 5.5 programme.

Borrowing

All residents of the City of Athens, as well as other Attica municipalities, are permitted to borrow books. All materials are loaned out except for reference books, rare publications and large titles.

Readers can borrow up to two books for a period of 15 days, with the possibility of a one-week extension, on the condition that they become a member of the library.

There are two reading rooms: one for books with a 100-seat capacity and one for newspapers and magazines with a 50-seat capacity.
