The City of Athens Philharmonic was founded in 1885 and performed during the first modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896. It consists of 107 distinguished artists.

 

The City of Athens Philharmonic participates in parades, ceremonial events, religious events and ceremonies in all City of Athens churches, and various events organised by groups and associations in greater Athens. It has been honoured on many occasions for its contribution.

 

Its quintet performs at all ceremonies held in City Hall. It appeared at all events organised by the Olympic Committee for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, such as the Olympic torch-lighting and torch hand-over ceremonies, visits by International Olympic Committee members and other distinguished guests, sporting events etc.

 

The City of Athens Philharmonic has conducted concerts in various cities throughout Greece, at the Herod Atticus theatre, Athens Concert Hall (Megaro Mousikis), in a production of Manos Hadjidakis' work "The Era of Melissanthi", at the Greek National Opera and venues in Cyprus and Canada (Montreal and Toronto).

 

The City of Athens Philharmonic also recorded music which featured in the Athens 2004 Paralympics closing ceremony.

 

Internationally renowned soloists such as Socrates Anthis, Spyros Mourikis, Nikos Xanthoulis, Gregory Jones and Chen Rui have collaborated with the City of Athens Philharmonic. 

 

For over 120 years, the City of Athens Philharmonic has played an important cultural and educational role, aiming for continuous improvement, leading the way in the country's cultural endeavours and remaining on par with Europe's best music ensembles.


The Artistic Director of the City of Athens Philharmonic is Ioannis Elefantis.
