Urban Planning

The monuments and structures that bear witness to Athens' cultural heritage and history - the squares and parks, roads and buildings, greenery and pavements, whether attractive or unappealing, newly-constructed or abandoned, luxurious or basic - all contribute to the city's aesthetic appearance and are part and parcel of our city's urban environment. We aim to improve this environment and call on all citizens to join our collective effort to beautify Athens.

We are planning individual and comprehensive regeneration projects for our city. We are not limiting these works to renovations but aiming for considerable change, which will lead to the social and economic regeneration of every corner and every neighbourhood of the city.

We continue to expand the programme for the refurbishment of Athens building facades. We are making the most of and proposing changes to existing laws, in order to extend the programme to include additional aspects of buildings, apart from facades, such as the rear or side exterior surfaces, as well as link interior open spaces. We are implementing provisions for the restoration of incomplete surfaces and planning action to deal with the unsightly appearance of television antennas and rooftop solar panels.

We are documenting abandoned buildings with the Geographic Information System (GIS), namely their features, ownership status and characteristics of the local area. We plan to revitalize these structures, on an individual or sectional basis, in cooperation with the owners of the building, in the case that they are located. Otherwise, we intervene and incorporate the buildings in the City's integrated expropriation programme.

We support programmes that promote contemporary art creation in public spaces and liven up the city's streets and squares. We work together with artists and universities and support creative art production featuring visual elements that may be installed on selected thoroughfares or in small squares.

We are planning specific measures for works in progress, ensuring that until the project is complete, construction sites remain fully covered with canvas sheets featuring themes selected by the municipality.

Hills, squares, groves, historical sites and buildings of various architectural periods are being incorporated in selected thematic routes through which Athenians and visitors will be able to learn about the development of Athens and the history of its residents over the decades. Special markers or tree plantings can be found on each route, in addition to well-lighted rest areas which feature modern materials and information points. We are also creating a visitor management programme for those traversing the routes on foot or in special vehicles, as well as catering to individuals with mobility difficulties.

Based on the relevant legislation, we are planning a coordinated directional framework for the city's regeneration projects and drawing up comprehensive programmes for the upgrading and regeneration of Athens neighbourhoods. We are activating sponsorship programmes and proceeding with innovative partnership projects involving the private sector and the participation of local communities and economic partners. In cooperation with universities and scientific organisations and agencies, we are introducing urban innovation competitions aimed at aesthetic improvement and sustainable development of the city and its neighbourhoods.
