29-09-2009: “City of Athens opens 99th Childcare Centre”
Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis today
officially opened Athens' 99th Childcare Centre
in one of the city's most heavily-populated areas, namely Kato Patissia, within
the framework of the Municipality's consistent efforts to support Athens' families.
The new Childcare Centre, located at
28 Geraki St,
brings the number of facilities operating in the 4th City District to 15. The
building has been specially adapted to meet the needs of young children and
includes a courtyard.
Following a blessing ceremony, Mayor Kaklamanis
thanked Athens City Council and Athens Municipal Creche staff for the important
work they carry out. He then made the following statement:
"When I assumed my duties some
two-and-a-half years ago, I took on the responsibility for 93 Childcare
Centres. At the time I said that within the first four years of administration,
this figure would rise to 100. Today, we are launching the 99th and I am
certain the pledge will not only be kept but expect the number of Childcare
Centres to reach 103-104.
If the Mayor of any city would like
to show that he truly does care, then he must show his concern chiefly for
children and senior citizens. And the City of Athens truly demonstrates its
concern for these two age groups".
In conclusion, Mayor Kaklamanis
underlined the fact that the City of Athens has developed Europe's largest
social care network, as noted by the Council of European Municipalities and
Regions, through the creation and operation of the Social Grocery, the Social
Pharmacy, the Athens Market and the provision of 1,500 lunchtime and evening meals
to homeless persons as well as other poverty-stricken individuals residing in
Athens.
