City District Councils
The City of Athens comprises seven (7) City District Councils.
Each City District is responsible for the management of all local matters and citizens may seek assistance from their City District
Council on matters concerning:
- Municipal rolls (issuance of birth, marital status and naturalisation certificates)
- Permanent residence certificates
- Verification of duplicates and certification of signatures
- Management of voting rolls
- Citizens' written complaints and provision for cleanliness, greenery, road maintenance, lighting, town planning, schools, cultural environment etc.
- Registration of children and Senior Citizens for City of Athens camp stays
Each district has its own Council.
Each City District Council consists of fifteen (15) elected councillors, nine (9) of whom are affiliated with the majority municipal ticket, four (4) with the second municipal ticket and one (1) with the other two municipal tickets.
Each City District Council has a chairman and deputy chairman. The Chairman is elected by majority for a period of two (2) years on the first Sunday in January in the first and third year of the Municipal term. The same applies to the election of the Deputy Chairman, who is designated by minority municipal tickets.
City District Councils conducts meetings called by the Chairman at least once a month, though they usually meet two (2) to three (3) times a month, generally on Wednesdays.
The City District Chairman drafts the agenda and calls on the council to attend via written invitation.
The meetings are open to the public and minutes are kept at each session.
A quorum is present at the meeting when more than half of its members are in attendance.
City District Council Responsibilities
Through its resolutions, the city district council expresses opinions and formulates proposals on the following subjects, either on its own initiative or following referral by the competent Municipal body:
- The use and development of Municipal properties located within the city district
- The protection of the natural, built and cultural environment and the state of cleanliness in the city district
- Municipal roads, bridges, squares, woods, gardens, outdoor recreational areas and, generally, all public spaces situated within the city district
- Traffic circulation and transport within the city district
- The creative use of open spaces in the area
- The development of the city district in terms of culture, social issues, care, health and welfare
- Town planning development and regeneration of the area
- The carrying out of new works as well as the maintenance and operation of projects that have been completed.
- The utilisation of local resources
- The assessment of general or specific problems which affect the city district
