17-04-2015: Pop Angst

S.G. Art Gallery, in Athens Greece is pleased to announce the opening of Eleni Tsotsorou's solo exhibition entitled "Pop Angst", curated by art historian and curator Megakles Rogakos.
"Pop Angst" is Tsotsorou's eighth solo exhibition. The artist will present a series of 22 paintings relating to the internal conflict experienced by man on his path through the labyrinth of fear, so that he may finally manage to emerge from darkness towards light, and conquer his inner freedom. In his commentary Rogakos writes: "Eleni Tsotsorou created a series of works that represent, in the most graphic manner, the points where hope may be detected. The title "Pop Angst" expresses an extreme counterpoint. On the one hand, it refers to the famous term 'angst' as used originally by the Danish existentialist philosopher Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) - the existential anxiety as the inevitable price paid for acquiring awareness regarding the human condition. On the other hand, it proposes to overcome the said anxiety using the main ways of ‘pop' aesthetics - spontaneity, creative extravaganza, light-hearted mood, mocking of seriousness combined with irony and satire, strong chromatic contrasts, and generally the rejection of the traditional in favour of the new. In this popular (pop) manner, the artist tames man's anxiety regarding the limited scope of options in his life, and urges him not to resign and be complacent and constantly subject to convention, but inspires him to retry and maintain the necessary awareness that will lead him to a condition of inner freedom."
