01-02-2015: M. Katzourakis-"New works and unknown works 1960-1965"

The exhibition will present new works by Michalis Katzourakis in mixed media and for the first time his unknown expressionist works from the 1960s will be presented in public.
The work of Michalis Katzourakis is directly associated with the poetic expression of geometric abstraction in both Greece and the international art world. The thematic recordings of his works come from the artist's personal records from the world of everyday objects, which evade their performing reports maintaining the substance of the structures and the delicate color rendering of the expression's austerity. The visible world is for the artist full of relationships of colors, structures, balances and hidden harmonies that attempt to be revealed through his works. Clear forms and pure compounds, the familiar and the normal, the hard and the thin, the geometric structure, dividing lines, vertical, horizontal and diagonal, square and rectangular openings, covered spaces and bounded surfaces, these are all part of the agreement between the painting and the objects of Michalis Katzourakis.

Michalis Katzourakis was born in Alexandria in 1933 and studied in Paris in the early 50s, which helped him shape his aesthetic and artistic education. His work overall involves the fertile characteristics of contemporary artistic pursuits coming from the international and the Greek post-war art and moves between reality and abstraction, while governed by fragmented references mainly towards urban culture.

A representative series of works from these searches will be presented for the first time in public, along with his new works. These first-exhibited works come from the expressionistic period of the artist who created them in the first years of the 60s. In these works we recognize the references of the artist in the movements of that era and the beginning of their fertile mutation in the later works of abstract geometricity that is prevalent in his later works during his creative exploration and experimentation until today.

The artist has shown his work in many solo and group exhibitions and his works have been placed in public places and collections in Greece and abroad. He lives and works in Athens.
