17-05-2010: "Noise pollution inspections"

City of Athens crews carried out noise pollution inspections on May 14 and 15, measuring sound levels for the first time at entertainment venues in central Athens.

Athens Municipal Police carried out the inspections using echometers in the areas of Kolonaki, Ambelokipi and Gazi and confirmed a total of 35 music sound level violations by establishments of sanitary interest.

More specifically, 10 echometer tests were conducted in Kolonaki, 5 in Ambelokipi and 20 in Gazi.

In accordance with legal procedures, 35 suits will be filed with the public prosecutor and the special music venue permits of all of the abovementioned establishments will be suspended, while the operating permit of one establishment will also be suspended.

As Deputy Mayor for Commercial Establishments and City Safety Andreas Papadakis said: "These operations will continue to be carried out as the City of Athens aims to ensure the harmonious coexistence of city residents and venue operators. Athens is a lively city and will remain so but everyone must contribute to the improvement of quality of life by respecting the rights of others".
