A rich heiress, disguised as a man, comes to the
Castle of the Countess in order to get to know better the feelings and the
character of a noble man, whom she is almost married to through letter writing,
obeying to her family's wishes. There, many surprises await her. The Countess
falls in love with her and her future husband confesses his real plans. The
truth comes out soon. Marivaux uses his mastery with words and gets to the
depths of the human psyche, where the truth and the true feelings of his heroes
are well hidden. With his humor, he gives us a glimpse of that time, a time
where people use each other for personal benefit or to rise socially. This time
in history is a precursor of the French Revolution.
