04-03-2010: “Multicultural event to be held in celebration of International Women’s Day”
The
City of Athens Migrant Services Department Intercultural
Centre, Office for Equality and migrant communities represented by
the Municipality's Migrant Council will hold a multicultural event on the
occasion of International Women's Day on Monday, March 8, at 18:00, at the City
of Athens Youth
and Sport Organisation Cultural Centre (18 Evelpidon St, near the courts).
Deputy Mayor for Equality and Social Integration Alexia
Evert-Alverti said: "On March 8, women
around the world will celebrate International Women's Day. This day symbolizes
the struggles women have made for their rights. Some of the things which the
young women of today take for granted, such as the right to vote, to an
education, to the freedom to determine our own future, to a choice in the
matter of motherhood, to labour rights and many other issues, were not always a
given. This day is a reminder and, this year, we will celebrate in a
multicultural fashion and further reinforce the ties of friendship and solidarity
between all women, Also, because other cultures may not always be aware of the
rights which Greek women have won".
During the event, groups from
various countries will perform songs and dances from their native homelands.
More specifically:
-
Albania - the Vellazerimi group and
singer Sofika Hodo will perform -
Egypt - the Muslim Association
of Greece will offer traditional delicacies -
Moldavia - women from the Orfeu organisation will
perform traditional dance and song -
Bangladesh - women from the DOEL
Cultural Society will perform traditional songs -
Ukraine - the Zuravlini Krai choir will present
traditional costume -
Romania - women of the Romanian
community will perform traditional dance and song -
Russia - the Chor Russia choir
will present traditional costume and sing -
Philippines - young men and women
and members of the KASAPI association
will perform traditional song and dance
The event is being held with the support of the City of Athens Youth and Sport Organisation and will
