"Mayday" is
a novel written in 1959 by Samarakis which contains in concentration his world
view. It deals with the issue of suicide and whether it is a solution for the
person that has lost all hope.
The lively
dialogues, the human approach on the subject and the cinematic images, are the
main characteristics in the writing of Samarakis, and a source of inspiration
for Aggelos Antonopoulos, who is responsible for the adaptation and the
direction of the play.
As he point
out, this text "communicates a Samarakis that is full of angst, with a style in
writing that is unexpected. This sense of the unexpected is what we see on stage
because of this particular directing approach. In the end, as long as there are
restless people that are never content, there is hope for this land.
Instead of your mass happiness I prefer my solitary pain, and instead of
your collective life I prefer the Freedom of death!
A. Samarakis
