06-11-2009: "City of Athens to open Vaccination Centres to help prevent AH1N1 flu virus pandemic"

The City of Athens submitted its Operational Plan to the National Health Operations Centre (EKEPY) on 30/04/2009, within the framework of National Planning for prevention of an AH1N1 flu virus pandemic. The City of Athens Operational Plan was incorporated in the National Plan for dealing with a potential AH1N1 flu virus pandemic.

Based on the Operational Plan, the City of Athens operates seven (7) Influenza Medical Centres, which have been incorporated in the EKEPY Primary Healthcare Network for dealing with the new flu virus (the 1st City of Athens Influenza Medical Centre began operating on 20/08/2009 and the remaining six began operating by September 1).

The City of Athens has scheduled the operation of twenty-seven (27) Influenza Vaccination Centres, as follows:
  • The seven (7) Influenza Medical Centres will be converted into Influenza Vaccination Centres (KEG)
  • The twenty (20) Friendship Clubs fulfil all requirements and will operate as Vaccination Centres (KEG)
  • One (1) Vaccination Centre will operate for migrants

In total, twenty-eight (28) KEG will operate.

The City of Athens and volunteers have provided full medical, nursing and administrative support for the abovementioned services. Staff underwent a training programme on 28-08-2009.

EKEPY has already sent four (4) medical packages to enable the operation of the abovementioned KEG.

City of Athens medical services are collaborating directly with the Hellenic Centre for Infectious Diseases Control (KEELPNO) in terms of guidance on the vaccination procedure and provision of information to citizens (printed material will be sent).

Based on City of Athens KEG planning, the Public Health Central Laboratory (KEDY) will send the vaccinations on the onus of KEELPNO.

Vaccination storage and maintenance regulations will be observed at all City of Athens KEG.

Consequently, the City of Athens has already organized and trained the appropriate personnel who will operate the twenty-eight (28) KEG, in this way responsibly contributing to National Planning for the prevention of a new flu virus AH1N1 pandemic.
