Removing abandoned vehicles from city streets constitutes an important step in the improvement of the city's visual image and creation of parking spaces.

The procedure for the collection of an abandoned motor vehicle or motorcycle (based on presidential decree 116/2004) is as follows:

  • The Abandoned Vehicles Office receives notification from the Garbage Collection or Street Cleaning Section, City Districts or citizens.
  • Municipal staff carry out surveillance, document the vehicle's details and affix a notice of removal to the vehicle.
  • If the vehicle does not bear registration plates, it is removed -after a 45-day period. If the vehicle does carry registration plates but does not bear a circulation permit, it is removed after a 90-day period.

Abandoned vehicles recovered by the City of Athens are sent for recycling.
