The City of Athens Cultural Organisation is the official entity responsible for implementing the municipality's cultural policy. The organisation is responsible for the supervision of museums, cultural centres, libraries, art galleries and the City of Athens Philharmonic Orchestra. This network of bodies, which operates within the framework of the City of Athens Cultural Organisation, reflects the breadth and size of the organisation's role. Culture concerns the past, present and future. The Cultural Organisation is required to preserve cultural heritage by protecting important collections and memoirs, highlight the artistic creation of the present and develop a cultural strategy for the future.
In addition, the Cultural Organisation has an important informative role as it is constantly opening new educational channels in the form of seminars, lectures, courses and tours, which are open to Athens' citizens. Student groups participate in educational programmes conducted at the City's museums and gallery on a daily basis, attending briefings and tours that concern various forms of cultural expression.
The City of Athens Cultural Organisation is an active element of Athenian society which maintains a two-way relationship with citizens, migrant residents and visitors.
As of 2007 the City of Athens Cultural Organisation's primary objective is to provide quality cultural stimuli to all Athenian citizens via a comprehensive cultural programme. In order to accomplish this, the City of Athens Cultural Organisation is focusing on four axes:
- Offering quality entertainment with events of a high standard for all residents.
- Educating children and youth through activities related to the arts, environmental awareness and new technologies.
- Putting Athens on the international cultural map by upgrading its role on a global level.
- Serving as a cultural umbrella which supports initiatives and movements in Athens organised by individuals and organisations.
