Conductor: Christos Halkias
One of the City of Athens' four music ensembles, the Greek Music Workshop was founded in 1998. It was established in order to promote and preserve "fine" Greek music. The Greek Music Workshop has staged particularly successful and significant concerts alongside renowned figures in the Greek music scene, including Lakis Halkias, Vassilis Lekkas, Babis Tsertos, Chronis Aidonidis, etc.
The Greek Music Workshop has performed special tributes honouring major Greek composers such as Yiannis Spanos, Apostolos Kaldaras, Manos Hadjidakis and Mikis Theodorakis as well as dedications to rembetika (Greek blues), laika (Greek popular music), dimotika (Greek folk) and entechna (Greek art song) music styles. Worth noting are its tributes to Greek poet Odysseus Elytis and actor Alekos Alexandrakis.
The Greek Music Workshop has participated in the municipality's Athens Carnival and Christmas in Athens events with folk and Greek popular songs, as well as musical events held during the annual Book Festival. The workshop has collaborated with the City of Athens Philharmonic and Big Band, taking listeners on a melodic journey involving classical and traditional music.
The Greek Music Workshop has performed in numerous concerts at the Athinais Cultural Centre, Neos Kosmos Cultural Centre, in the Thissio area, Roman Agora, Athens Nursing Home, Attiko Woods and the Kolonos Hill theatre.
Christos Halkias has conducted the ensemble since its foundation.
